Explore The Outdoors Festival a huge success

Hundreds attended the outdoor experience at Camp Timpoochee Walton Outdoors and Walton County 4-H hosted the Explore The Outdoors Festival at Camp Timpochee on Oct. 9 with great success. More than 400 children and their families attended the festival focusing on the outdoor experience. The day was enjoyed by the young and old as attendees enjoyed outdoor sports such as fishing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and archery. Lots of flounder being caught in the bay! Bay: Lots of flounder are being caught with a hook and line.  Redfish in all sizes along with speckled trout and a few Spanish mackerel being caught as well. Snapper season opens again and dove season kicks off Oct. 2 Bay: Flounder are showing up and getting caught with a hook and line.  Spanish mackerel along with redfish being caught with Johnson and Acme Kastmaster spoons. Fish on! Bay: Some spanish mackerel in the west end of the bay along with redfish being caught with gold spoons and Mirodine lures. Lots of shrimp in the bay and the fish are eating them! Hogfish caught along reef in Gulf

Local fisherman spears fish not commonly found in our area Local fisherman James Griffith speared this hogfish (Lachnolaimus maximus) Sept. 5 in the Gulf of Mexico near Sandestin. Diving in about 100 ft. of water James found the hogfish along a natural reef. “I’m guessing it weighed about 6 or 7 pounds. Crab Island Shoothout fishing tournament Sept. 25

Proceeds benefit Destin Charter Boat Association Time: Daybreak – 4 p.m. Location: Crab Island, Destin The tournament starts at daybreak.  Scales open at 9 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. Top aggregate weight of Speckled Trout and Redfish wins $500. Kayak fishing seminar in Destin Sept. 11
