Memorial Day service at Gum Creek Cemetery

The annual Memorial Day Service will be held on Monday, May 27, 2024. The service will begin at the Gum Creek Cemetery near Glendale, Florida at 8:00 a.m.

Gum Creek Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Walton County, serving our community for more than 160 years. The cemetery marks the final resting place of veterans from American Wars back to the early 19th century. Known to be buried at the cemetery are 12 known Civil War veterans and one Seminole War veteran. There are many veterans from the 20th Century conflicts from WWI through the Gulf War.

Memorial Day ceremony at Gulf Cemetery in Santa Rosa Beach

Gulf Cemetery will be hosting their annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 27, 2024 starting at 10 a.m.  This ceremony is a wonderful opportunity for the entire family to join in a dignified, respectful, and patriotic tribute to the men and women who served our country in the Armed Forces and paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

This year, a very special musician, Mary Kay Grant Thompson will be playing bassoon with our strings for the Memorial Day ceremony at Historic Gulf Cemetery. Mary Kay is a fourth generation musician and is married to retired band director, Bill Thompson. Soon after graduating from the University of Alabama, Mary Kay played in the faculty quintet and taught bassoon at the University of Alabama, University of Montevallo and Sanford University. After moving to Panama City, Florida, Mary Kay has performed with the Pensacola Symphony, Sinfonia, Northwest Florida Ballet and recently retired as Principal Bassoonist from the Panama City Symphony Orchestra after 50 years. Teaching elementary music for 32 years she and husband, Bill, received the Bay District Schools Legacy Teacher Award for 2022. The gift of music has passed down to their son, Will, in The Will Thompson Band. Will’s young teenage children, play and sing locally in Panama City.
