After serving his country for over two decades as a Communication Program Manager in the U.S. Air Force, Al Cook has found a new calling: helping bluebirds thrive in Walton County, Florida. Originally from Vermont, Al settled in the area after retiring from Eglin Air Force Base. Since then, he has combined his post-retirement hobbies of carpentry and gardening with his passion for wildlife conservation to make a meaningful impact on his community.
In 2022, after building a home in Freeport, Al noticed an abundance of bluebirds in his yard. Inspired to help, he joined the Florida Bluebird Society and began building birdhouses to address the housing shortage these birds face. Starting with six houses in his backyard, Al created a bluebird haven complete with bird baths, fountains, and mealworm feeders. His efforts resulted in dozens of fledglings in just one year.
Beyond his backyard, Al has expanded his mission. He partnered with his HOA to replace worn-out birdhouses in neighborhood common areas, using cost-effective materials and his carpentry skills to craft sturdy homes for bluebirds. He also donates birdhouses to the Walton County Master Gardener Program and the Defuniak Springs Garden Club, where they’re given away as door prizes to encourage others to join the conservation effort.
Al’s dedication to bluebird conservation reflects his desire to give back—not just to his community but to nature itself. By gifting birdhouses and educating others, Al hopes to inspire people to help these vibrant birds thrive.
For Al, this project is more than a hobby; it’s a fulfilling way to stay active and contribute to the environment. “Put up a birdhouse,” he says. “You’ll be helping Mother Nature, and as a bonus, you’ll love seeing these beautiful birds outside your window.”
Whether through his role as a Master Gardener, a Garden Club member, or simply a neighbor who cares, Al Cook is leaving a lasting legacy—one bluebird at a time.
