A sign that says “Please Help Yourself” is not often seen these days. However, the folks at Freeport United Methodist Church have provided a community garden that gives back.

Rev. Wesley Syfrett along with volunteers Ed Yerbey, Butch Shaffer, Greg Yancy and Brian Babbs decided last October to do something that gives back to the community. A field was plowed, a sprinkler system put in and rows of greens such as collards, mustard, spinach along with radishes were planted.

“It’s open to the public and the garden offers a mess ‘o greens,” church secretary Jo Yancy said.

The group plans a seasonal spring garden as well.

Freeport United Methodist Church is located at the corner of CR83A and 185 Harrison Street, Freeport. Sunday service is at 10 a.m.
