September:
A visit to a very popular hotspot – twice!
Sept. 16th & 30th we’ll observe over the Okaloosa Holding Ponds and Wright Landfill pond.
We’ll meet up along the west edge of Roberts Road electric substation north of Helen Back Pizza off Lewis Turner Blvd in Wright. On our website is a link to a map to see the exact location. On the 16th Malcolm Swan will lead us starting at 8 am. On the 30th, Alan will start earlier at 7:30 am. We will look for hawks, ducks, plovers, sandpipers, swallows, and other early migrants.
October:
Oct. 14th, Alan Knothe will be leading a field trip to Ft. Pickens at Gulf Islands National Seashore. Meet 7:00 am at the Uptown Station, 99 Eglin Parkway NE (west side nearest Eglin Pkwy), Fort Walton Beach or Battery Langdon at 8:45 am.
Oct. 21st will be a bird walk at Veterans Park on Okaloosa Island with leader Jim Anderton. We visit bayshore, barrier island woodland, and 5 wetlands. Meet 7:30 am on the north side of the Destin/FWB Convention Center parking lot on Okaloosa Island.
Oct. 28th, we’ll join up with Emily Ellis to help Lake Powell Community Alliance with their monthly Bird Survey at Camp Helen State Park. We will meet at 8:00 am at the Entrance Gate of Camp Helen State Park.
Birding checklist:
Bring your binoculars, camera, or scope
Wear soft neutral colors and avoid bright and white
Wear long pants, closed toed shoes and bring a hat
Pack water and necessary snacks or picnic lunch for field trips farther away
Prepare to carpool if needed
