DeFuniak Springs is home to the area’s newest disc golf course. The sport has been gaining popularity throughout the region and players are eagerly awaiting the chance to experience the course.
To kick things off, local players have organized the inaugural Hyzerbomb Hustle disc golf tournament. The tournament is open to a wide array of players and will feature both amateur and pro divisions. Men and women over the age of 13 are invited to take part and prizes will be awarded to top finishers. For children, there will be a putting challenge.
While the sport of disc golf has origins dating back over 40 years, its popularity has been growing along the Emerald Coast. The addition of a new course is a welcomed one and the result of a joint effort between the Walton County Parks and Recreation Department and local enthusiasts. For months, the groups have worked together to develop property at Wee Care Park in northern DeFuniak Springs. Development of the project meant designing an 18-hole course that takes advantage of the park’s wooded areas, as well as open spaces.
The sport is played much like traditional golf, but with the use of circular discs, similar to Frisbees, and baskets.
Those interested in competing in the tournament or those who want to see what the sport is all about are invited to Wee Care Park, located at 552 Walton Road, DeFuniak Springs on Saturday, November 4. Registration will open at 7 a.m. and tournament play will begin at 8:30 a.m. Because space is limited, players are highly encouraged to preregister.
