The Florida Forest Service will be celebrating this year’s Florida ArborDay with a tree giveaway event for Walton County residents.
The event will be held Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, in the parking lot of Ace Hardware, located at 633 U.S. Highway 90 W. in DeFuniak Springs. The Florida Forest Service will be giving away 200 1-gallon-sized trees, including white oaks, Chickasaw plums, red maples, and pignut hickories. The event will run from 9 a.m. until noon or until all the trees are given away. Trees will be limited to one per person, but depending on supply, residents might be able to pick up more trees as the event ends.
Florida Forest Service personnel will be on hand at all events to offer information on the proper planting, pruning, and maintenance of the available trees. All times are Central Standard Time. The Florida Forest Service, a division of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, manages more than 1 million acres of state forests and provides forest management assistance on more than 17 million acres of private and community forests. The Florida Forest Service is also responsible for protecting homes, forestland, and natural resources from the devastating effects of wildfire on more than 26 million acres.
