The colony of Tristán de Luna: unearthing secrets of the 1559 expedition presentation in Niceville Sept. 5
Join in on Thursday, September 5th, as John R. Bratten, Ph.D., Professor of Anthropology at the University of West Florida, presents a talk on the 1559-1561 Tristán de Luna y Arellano expedition, the most ambitious Spanish attempt to colonize Florida. The hurricane that destroyed most of the fleet created a rich archaeological site, offering insights into the settlement, fleet, and daily lives of the colonists through thousands of recovered artifacts.
This Choctawhatchee Audubon Society program will be held in Room 800 on the 2nd floor of the Chandler Center (NW door of 519 Helms St.) at the Crosspoint Church in Niceville. Join us for socializing at 6:30 p.m., followed by the presentation at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. We look forward to welcoming all interested community members to this intriguing program.
Birding in Fort Walton Sept. 7
Join in on September 7, to experience the beauty of local birdlife at the Okaloosa holding ponds and Wright pond with expert birder and photographer Jim Anderton.
Meet at 7:30 a.m. along the west edge of Roberts Road, just a couple hundred feet north of Task Force Pizza Co. off Lewis Turner Blvd. Remember to wear closed-toed shoes, long pants, and bring a hat, water, and your binoculars, scope, or camera.
