On June 9, 2014 the DeFuniak Springs City Council approved a request by TESLA Motors to install and equip six vehicle charging stations within the city limits. TESLA Motors is an American company based out of Palo Alto, California that designs, manufactures, and sells high-performance electric vehicles.
TESLA representative Beau Whiteman gave a brief presentation to the Council explaining its long-term goals to provide charging stations across the U.S. The six charging station spaces will be at one location in DeFuniak Springs; two reserved strictly for TESLA drivers initially, with the additional four reserved for the future. Exact location has not yet been decided, however 10th Street was discussed at the meeting. The stations will be installed as early as this fall.
TESLA chose DeFuniak Springs as it is an ideal location centered between Mobile, Ala. and Tallahassee, where stations are currently in the works. The company currently has 94 stations across the U.S., with plans to have 80 percent of the U.S. covered by the end of 2014 and 98 percent by the end of 2015.
