Plant hike at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park May 11

Date/time: Wednesday May 11, 9 – 10 a.m. Topsail Hill Preserve State Park invites you to enjoy an informational plant hike. Visitors will learn about some of the plant species here at the park. Some of these plants are truly invasive and carry with them, few, if any, of the natural controls that keep them in check in their native ranges, while some are imperiled and others can be used for medicinal purposes. Panfish benefit fishing tournament on Lake Seminole May 21

A panfish tournament will be held at Sneads Park on Lake Seminole on Saturday, May 21. $35/person with the “Best of 50” pan fish weigh-in per boat (Fishermen may fish alone or with partners). All proceeds will be used locally to support Operation Outdoor Freedom, an endeavor of the Florida Forest Service that provides recreational opportunities to wounded veterans. Explore Laidlaw Plantation Sanctuary in Vernon May 14

The Choctawhatchee Audubon Society will be hosted by the Bay County Audubon Chapter at their 400 acre Laidlaw Plantation Sanctuary on May 14. Meet at 7 a.m. in the CVS parking lot in Niceville’s Oak Creek Shopping center. Laidlaw Plantation is just north of Vernon in Washington County. Bring a sack lunch, bug spray, binoculars, camera and dress appropriately for walking in the woods. Volunteer opportunities available with Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance

OPERATION RESTORATION is a collaborative effort between Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (CBA) and community volunteers to restore degraded shorelines in Choctawhatchee Bay by constructing oyster reefs made from recycled and fossilized oyster shell. These reefs help to reduce erosion, provide habitat for marine life and improve overall water quality in our Bay. Star gazing at Eden Gardens State Park May 27

Eden Gardens State park will be hosting a star gazing program on Friday, May 27. Volunteers from the Northwest Florida Astronomy Association will set up several telescopes for viewing of star clusters, planets and galaxies. They will answer questions about the night sky. All ages are invited to enjoy an evening of star gazing. The Park will close at sunset at 7:41 p.m. Those attending the star gazing should arrive prior to sunset. Program is from 7:00  – 9:00 p.m....
